NuvaRing (Generic name: Etonogestrel/ Ethinyl Estradiol) is the first monthly vaginal ring approved for birth control. Nuva Ring is a soft, flexible and transparent ring about 2 inches in diameter that provides month-long contraceptive protection. It releases a combination of female hormone, progestin and estrogen, and is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy if used correctly. These hormones enter into the woman's bloodstream and prevent pregnancy mainly by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg. Nuva Ring conveniently fits into a woman’s active lifestyle. It is inserted into the vagina for 3 weeks at a time, then removed for 1-week break, during which time a menstrual period usually occurs. Nuvaring Vaginal Ring Side Effects:
The most common NuvaRing side effects are acne, breast tenderness, changes in menstrual period, headache, irritation, nausea, vaginal infections, vaginal secretion, vomiting, weight gain, etc. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as breast lumps, sharp chest pain, dizziness, fever, mood changes, breathing difficulty, vision changes, unusual vaginal bleeding or spotting, and serious allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of face, hands, mouth, legs or feet), please inform your doctor immediately.

Before using NuvaRing ring, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions, especially of: blood clots, blood pressure, breast cancer, chest pain, cigarette smoking, diabetes, eye disorder, gallbladder or liver disease, fibroid tumours, heart attack, jaundice, overweight, severe migraine headaches, stroke, and unusual vaginal bleeding. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use, especially of: aminoglutethimide (Cytadren), aprepitant (Emend), antifungals, barbiturates, certain seizure medications, cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune), griseofulvin (Grifulvin), HIV protease inhibitors, modafinil (Provigil), nafcillin (Nallpen, Unipen), rifamycin antibiotics, selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), St. John's wort, warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven). Nuva ring is inserted in the vagina once a month and must be removed exactly 21 days after insertion. Keep in mind the NuvaRing does NOT protect against sexually transmitted infections.
