The brand Glucophage is available in the strength of 500 mg and 850 mg tablets. The generic Metformin is available in the strength of 500 mg and 850 mg tablets and 500 mg/150 ml oral solution.

Usage

Glucophage (Metformin) is a prescription medication used with a proper diet and exercise program and with other medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults and kids over 10 years old. Metformin belongs to class of drugs called biguanides. This medication works by helping to control blood-sugar levels. It decreases the amount of glucose absorbed from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver. It is for the treatment of type 2 diabetes only and is not indicated for type 1 diabetes. It may be used as part of an overall treatment program which may include insulin products as well as changes to diet and exercise. Diabetes is more common in adults over age 40, and those who are overweight. You may help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems by controlling high blood sugar. You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires you to be alert or have a clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcohol while you are taking this medication because it may increase your risk of lactic acidosis and developing low blood sugar. Glucophage should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant. This medication can cause changes in the menstrual cycle and increase the risk of becoming pregnant. Talk to your doctor about the use of a reliable birth control while you are using this medication. Metformin passes into breast milk in small amounts. Talk to your doctor before you breast-feed. There may a drug interaction between Metformin and other medications such as procainamide, digoxin, quinidine, trimethoprim and vancomycin.
