Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin or methylcobalamin, is a synthetic form of cyanocobalamin used for the prevention and treatment of low levels of Vitamin B12 in the blood. Vitamin B12 is needed to maintain good metabolism, health of blood cells and nerves. Serious Vitamin B12 deficiency can result in decreased number of red blood cells (anemia), stomach or intestinal diseases and permanent nerve damage. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also result from poor nutrition, cancer, HIV, during pregnancy, old age, due to alcoholism. Conditions such as atrophic gastritis (thinning of the stomach lining), Pernicious anemia (which makes it harder for your body to absorb Vitamin B12), Intestinal diseases such as crohn’s disease, celiac disease, bacterial growth and immune system disorders such as Grave’s disease or lupus can lead to Vitamin B12 deficiency in the body.
