Visanne is prescribed for the treatment of painful symptoms caused by endometriosis (endometrium-like tissues outside the uterus which cause chronic inflammation) in women who are 18 years of age and above and have had the first menstrual cycle (menarche). Visanne works by reducing the pelvic pain associated with endometriosis. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. One tablet should be swallowed daily, preferably at the same time, with some liquid as needed. Visanne can be taken with or without food. Visanne will be less effective if you miss a tablet or have vomiting or diarrhea. If you miss one or more tablets, take a tablet as soon as you remember and then continue taking the tablet the next day at your usual time. Do not take more than one tablet per day.

Visanne is manufactured by Bayer and comes from Canada. The active ingredient in Visanne is Dienogest. The generic form of Visanne is not available. Visanne is available as tablets in 28 tablet blister packs in the dosage form of 2 mg.
Stop taking Visanne and call your doctor at once if you have one of these serious side effects:
• Breast lump
• Unexpected vaginal bleeding
• Persistent sad or depressed mood
• Unusual swelling of extremities
Less serious side effects include weight gain, sleeping problems, nervousness, loss of interest in sex, headache, migraine, abdominal pain, acne or hair loss, breast discomfort, ovarian cyst, generalized weakness and irritability. Please call your doctor if you have any further concerns or questions.
While using Visanne you must use a nonhormonal birth control method such as condoms or a diaphragm. Do not use any form of birth control that contains hormones. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels. You should not smoke while taking Visanne. Do not take Visanne if you are allergic to dienogest are pregnant or breastfeeding, suffer from a medical condition related to blood clot in the vessels of lungs, or legs, have or had heart disease including heart attack, stroke and angina, diabetes with blood vessel damage, severe liver disease, benign or malignant tumor of liver, cancer of breast or other reproductive organs, have any unexplained vaginal bleeding, have loss of vision due to blood vessel disease of the eye, migraine headache. Visanne may interact with antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin), antidepressants (e.g., fluoxetine), anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin), antacids (e.g., cimetidine), blood pressure medication (e.g., diltiazem), drugs used for the treatment of HIV/Hepatitis C Virus infections (e.g., ritonavir), herbal or food products such as St. John’s wort and Grapefruit juice.
