Fluanxol (Flupentixol)

Fluanxol (Flupentixol) is used for the long-term treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses in adults such as depression. Flupentixol belongs to a class of drugs known as thioxanthene neuroleptics. It works by affecting nerve pathways in certain areas of the brain to help correct certain chemical imbalances. This medication helps you think more clearly, decreases hallucinations and negative thoughts, and makes it easier to function in everyday life. Fluanxol is not recommended when agitation or hyperactivity are severe or in older adults with dementia.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. The common side effects of Fluanxol may include dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, restlessness, and trouble sleeping.

Contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• Difficult urination;
• Liver problems;
• Low number of red or white blood cells;
• Unusual mood changes such as depression, mania, worsening of psychosis;
• Vision problems

Seek immediate medical attention if you have any of these rare but serious side effects such as:
• Chest pain;
• Fainting;
• Seizures;
• Severe constipation;
• Severe dizziness

Before taking Fluanxol, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or to other thioxanthenes or if you have any other allergies. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you have ever had:
• Blood flow problems or blood problems;
• Brain problems;
• Breast cancer;
• Difficulty urinating;
• Drug or alcohol addiction;
• Glaucoma;
• High or low blood pressure;
• Kidney or liver problems;
• Parkinson's disease;
• Pheochromocytoma;
• Seizures;
• Slowed gut movement

Fluanxol may cause blurred vision, or make you dizzy or may impair your reactions. Alcohol and marijuana can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. This medication may make you sweat less, which may make you more likely to get a heat stroke. Avoid doing anything that may cause you to overheat. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Fluanxol and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
