Usage

Soriatane (Acitretin) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of severe psoriasis in adults. This medication can cause severe birth defects so a negative pregnancy is required before initiating treatment, and have severe psoriasis that is for women of reproductive age and unresponsive to other medications. A reliable birth control method is indicated while using this medication. The active ingredient in Soriatane is called Acitretin, which is a form of vitamin A. This drug works by helping the skin to renew itself more quickly, thus alleviating the symptoms of psoriasis. This drug does not cure psoriasis, and the illness may reappear once treatment ceases.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Soriatane may include: diarrhea, dry eyes, dry mouth, dry or runny nose, chapped or peeling skin, flushing, fragile skin, hair loss, itching, mild headache, muscle tightness, nausea, nosebleeds, stomach pain, ringing in the ears, scaly skin, sleep problems, sticky feeling on the skin, and weak nails. Notify your doctor or seek emergency medical care if you have any serious side effects such as:
• An allergic reaction (itching, rash, swelling, difficult breathing);
• Blurred vision, headache with nausea or vomiting;
• Chest pain, heavy feeling in the chest, difficulty breathing;
• Depression, aggression, unusual thoughts or behavior, self-harm;
• High blood sugar;
• Jaundice;
• Loss of feeling in the hands or feet, movement problems, bone pain;
• Mouth sores, swollen or bleeding gums;
• Pain, swelling, warmth or redness in legs;
• Sudden decrease in night vision;
• Sudden cough, wheezing, breathing problems;
• Sudden severe headache, confusion, balance problems.

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Soriatane if you are allergic to Acitretin or to any ingredients of this medication or if you:
• Have repeated high blood lipids (fat in the blood);

• Take methotrexate or tetracyclines

Soriatane may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds or sunlamps. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing when you are outdoors. Soriatane is pregnancy category X, and can cause severe birth defects. It is therefore required that you must take a pregnancy test prior to treatment and use effective contraception during treatment. You should not take Soriatane if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, and herbal medications. Also tell them about any vitamins and supplements you take. There may be an interaction between Soriatane and other medications, especially: methotrexate, St. John's wort, tetracycline antibiotics, and vitamin A. If you wear contact lenses, you may find them uncomfortable while taking this medication.
