Usage

Breo Ellipta (Fluticasone furoate/Vilanterol Trifenatate) is a once-daily prescription medication that is used for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both, for better breathing and fewer flare-ups in patients over 18 years old. This medication contains a combination of Fluticasone and Vilanterol. Fluticasone is a steroid. It prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Vilanterol is a bronchodilator; it belongs to a class of drugs known as long-acting beta agonists. It works by relaxing muscles in the airways and improving the lung function for better breathing. Breo Ellipta should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems and will not replace a rescue inhaler. If you have an asthma attack, use your quick-relief inhaler such as Salbutamol as prescribed your doctor.

Breo Ellipta must be used regularly to be effective. The recommended maximum dose approved for COPD is 100 mcg/25 mcg, and for asthma, the recommended dosage is 100 mcg/25 mcg or 200 mcg/25 mcg, administered as one inhalation once daily preferably in the evening. The common side effects of Breo Ellipta may include coughing, dry or irritated throat, headache, hoarseness and runny nose. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you have any of the serious side effects may include:

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Breo Ellipta if you are allergic to Fluticasone, Vilanterol, or milk proteins. Breo Ellipta should not be used in children and adolescents under the age of 18 years. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history especially of high blood pressure, bone loss, depression, diabetes, eye problems, heart problems, liver problems, overactive thyroid or any recent infections. Fluticasone/Vilanterol may cause a condition called QT prolongation. The risk of QT prolongation may be increased if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other medications that may cause QT prolongation. Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase your risk of QT prolongation. Fluticasone/Vilaterol can make you more likely to get infections or may worsen current infections. Avoid contact with people who have infections that may spread to others. This medication may temporarily slow down a child's growth if used for a long time. Poor controlled asthma can also slow down growth. This medication should not be used during pregnancy, unless it is clearly needed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Breo Ellipta and other medications such as antifungals containing keroconazole, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic antidepressants, beta-blockers, or diuretics, etc. There are some medications that may affect the removal of Fluticasone from your body, which can affect how this medication works. These include boceprevir, lopinavir, ritonavir and ketoconazole, strong cyp3a4 inhibitors, etc.

Breo Ellipta should be stored in the unopened foil tray at room temperature between 68°F and 77°F (20°C and 25°C) in a dry place away from heat and sunlight. If you store in a refrigerator, allow the inhaler to return to room temperature for at least an hour before use. The in-use shelf-life of Breo is six weeks. Discard Breo in the trash six weeks after you open the foil tray or when the counter reads "0" whichever comes first.
