Risperdal (risperidone)is a medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression) symptoms, and irritability symptoms in children who are autistic. Store at room temperature and do not freeze liquid formulation of Risperdal (risperidone). Keep away from moisture, light, and heat. Read the directions on the prescription label. Do not take larger doses than prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication as directed on the label or by your pharmacist, doctor, or other healthcare provider. Risperdal (risperidone) can be taken with or without food. If prescribed with tablet formulation of Risperdal (risperidone), remove tablets from the blister pack by peeling back the foil at the back of the blister pack and take out the tablet with dry hands. Pushing the tablet through the foil can damage the tablet, remove tablets only when you are ready to take the medicine. Place the tablet in your mouth and allow it to dissolve on your tongue. Do not swallow or chew. Continuously swallowing until the tablet dissolves completely. Drink water after the tablet has dissolved. Refill your prescription of Risperdal (risperidone) before it runs out. If you are prescribed with the liquid formulation of Risperdal (risperidone), use a measuring spoon or cup to measure out a dose of Risperdal (risperidone). Do not use a regular table spoon. Do not take Risperdal (risperidone) with cola or tea. Before taking Risperdal (risperidone), inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding; if you are taking prescription or over the counter medication, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements; if you have liver disease; if you are about to start a new medication; if you have phenylketonuria (PKU); if you are diabetic; if you have kidney disease, live disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems; if you have a history of heart attack or stroke, low white blood cell (WBC) counts, or suicidal thoughts; or breast cancer; if you have seizures or epilepsy, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, or trouble swallowing. When taking Risperdal (risperidone), you may develop high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), talk to you doctor if you experience the following: excessive hunger, weakness, or increased thirst or urination.Severe: Tremor; feeling light-headed, fainting; restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck; trouble swallowing; fever, stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats; white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips; or severe allergic reactions including itching, tightness in the chest, rash, hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue or face.Common: Weight gain; mild restlessness, drowsiness, or tremor; decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm; sleepiness, dreaming more than usual; nausea, dry mouth, constipation; blurred vision; problems with urination; or dizziness or Other: None.
