Salonpas (Methyl Salicylate Topical) is an OTC medication used for temporary relief of muscle or joint pain caused by strains, sprains, arthritis, bruising, or backaches. This medication belongs to a class of medications called topical analgesics, and works through its abilities as a counter-irritant. Once the patch or spray is applied, the medication causes the skin to feel a cooling sensation, then warmth. These sensations are then sent to the brain to serve as distractions from the joint and muscle pain. Salonpas may also help with inflammation. As a topical medication, Salonpas should only be used externally. Do not take orally.

We currently have the brand Salonpas from Canada manufactured by McCaughey. Salonpas is available as patches (hot capsicum patch, large patch, or pain relief patch) and a pain relieving jet spray. The generic version is not available.
Common side effects of Salonpas may include a mild cold or burning sensation where you apply the medication.
Wash your skin and get immediate medical attention if you have any severe burning, pain, swelling, or blistering of the skin where you applied this medication.

You should not use Salonpas if you are allergic to Methyl Salicylate, or if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates. To make sure this medication is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had any serious medical conditions. It is not known whether Salonpas will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using this medication. It is not known whether this medication will pass into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not apply Salonpas to your breast area if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not use this medication on a child younger than 12 years old without medical advice. Avoid getting this medication in your mouth, nose, rectum, or vagina. If this does happen, rinse with water. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, nose, genitals, or rectum until this medication has been washed off your hands. Also, avoid handling food while the medication is still on your hands. It is not likely that medication you apply topically will interact with medication you take orally or inject. Salonpas may interact with some medications, including anisindione, dicumarol, and warfarin. This is not a complete list of interactions, and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions. Avoid applying any topical medications to the same area you apply Salonpas.
