Indications

Periostat is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections throughout the body as well as pimples and abscesses caused by rosacea. The medication is also often used to prevent malaria and treat anthrax infection after possible exposure.

Doxycycline hyclate is a tetracycline antibiotic that inhibits bacterial spread and growth throughout your system. Along with other antibiotics in its family, this medication also offers anti-inflammatory effects which help Periostat treat acne and rosacea in adults.

This antibiotic medication is an effective treatment for a variety of infections including side effects of rosacea such as pimples and abscesses. Periostat is generally well-tolerated with a low incidence of adverse reactions and has been found to be highly effective at treating respiratory tract infections.

Cautions

Drink plenty of fluids while taking Periostat to avoid esophageal irritation and ulceration.

Do not take Periostat at the same time as foods that are rich in calcium or with bismuth salicylates because these reduce your body’s ability to absorb doxycycline.

Use Periostat as directed for the entire length of time prescribed whether you feel better or not before reaching the end of your therapy. Doing this helps ensure your infection is completely cleared and reduces the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

To ensure your safety in taking Periostat, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Asthma
  • Diarrhea
  • Intracranial hypertension
  • Vaginal candidiasis
  • Kidney problems

Do not give Periostat to any child under the age of 8 unless directed to do so by the child’s doctor. Doxycycline can cause children’s teeth to permanently discolour and slow bone growth.

Periostat may cause your skin, nails, eyes, teeth, gums, or scars to darken in colour. Speak with your doctor for more information if you have any concerns about this possible effect.

Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea is a common side effect reported in users of all antibiotics, including Periostat because antibacterial drugs alter your colon’s flora. Talk to your doctor right away if you experience diarrhea after using this medication.

Tetracycline users have been found to develop intracranial hypertension (IH) which often resolves after ending treatment, but vision loss may be permanent. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any symptoms such as headache, blurred vision, diplopia, and vision loss.

Tetracyclines including doxycycline may cause you to be more sensitive to sunlight and to burn more easily. Avoid long and direct exposure to the sun or UV rays while using Periostat and discuss with your doctor if you notice an increase in your skin’s sensitivity.

Do not use Periostat during pregnancy because doxycycline can cause complications and harm to an unborn child. Speak with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.

Call your doctor right away if you develop a fever, rash, joint pain, or tiredness because they can all be symptoms of an autoimmune syndrome.

Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding while taking Periostat to discuss the risks and benefits.

Oral contraceptives may be less effective during treatment with doxycycline. Use other forms of birth control during therapy to avoid getting pregnant.

Some drugs may interact with doxycycline and cause adverse side effects. To avoid this, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicine, but especially any of the following:

  • Anticoagulant medications
  • Penicillin
  • Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium
  • Medications containing iron
  • Barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
  • methoxyflurane

FAQ

What is Periostat used for?

Periostat is an antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, periodontitis, and others. The medication uses doxycycline hyclate, a tetracycline antibiotic that slows bacteria growth and spread while also offering anti-inflammatory effects to treat infections and their symptoms.

Can I take Periostat if I’m allergic to penicillin?

Yes, you can take this antibiotic medication if you are allergic to penicillin because it uses doxycycline hyclate to treat infections. Doxycycline is in the tetracycline class of antibiotics and is unrelated to penicillin. This combined with the medications efficacy and safety profile makes Periostat a strong choice for treating infections.
