Description

Generic Name: desvenlafaxine

Drug Class: serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)

What is Pristiq?

Pristiq is an oral prescription drug used to treat a major depressive disorder or MDD. It can improve the energy level, mood, and feelings of well-being among patients who are clinically diagnosed with MDD.

Dosage Forms

This is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg extended-release tablets.

Pristiq Mechanism of Action

The exact action of this SNRI is still unknown. In the central nervous system, however, it is hypothesized to increase serotonergic and noradrenergic activity. This increases the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, which are both involved in depression.

How to Take Pristiq

It is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide provided by a healthcare provider before beginning to use Pristiq. You must not take any medication unless you have read and comprehended the instructions and uses. For more medical advice or information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

The only way to take this tablet is by mouth. This is usually prescribed once a day. It can be consumed with or without food. Swallow the extended-release tablet entirely. Do not crush or chew it to avoid releasing all the active ingredients at once.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your Pristiq dosage. Your doctor may start with a low dose and gradually increase your dose to prevent adverse reactions. You should not take this oral drug more frequently than advised. Also, do not discontinue this SNRI abruptly to avoid Pristiq withdrawal.

This SNRI can cause dizziness, sleepiness, and visual problems, among other things. When performing duties that need clear vision and awareness, such as driving, you should use caution. Further, Pristiq can interact with alcohol and worsen your symptoms or adverse effects. It may also put you at risk for liver damage. While on this treatment, stay away from alcohol.
