Usage

Benicar HCT (Olmesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide) is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can cause fluid retention. Olmesartan is in a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARB). Benicar HCT keeps blood vessels from narrowing, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow. You can help prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems by lowering high blood pressure.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

Possible side effects caused by Benicar Hydrochlorothiazide include: dizziness or lightheadedness especially when changing position from sitting up or standing from sitting down or laying down, nausea or vomiting, dry mouth, diarrhea, or fatigue. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. Benicar HCT may cause dehydration and mineral loss. Inform your doctor if you have any symptoms of dehydration or mineral loss such as:

• Muscle cramps or weakness;

• Decrease in vision;
• Eye pain;
• Fainting;
• Severe or persistent diarrhea;
• Signs of kidney problems;
• Symptoms of a high potassium level

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Benicar HCT if you are allergic to Olmesartan or Hydrochlorothiazide or if you are allergic to other ARBs and thiazide diuretics. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history especially of gout, kidney disease, liver disease, lupus, severe loss of body water and minerals and skin cancer. This medication may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana can make you dizzier. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can lower your blood pressure and may increase some of the side effects of Benicar Hydrochlorothiazide. Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough. Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes while you are taking Benicar HCT, unless your doctor has told you to. If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar regularly. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy as it can harm an unborn baby. It is unknown if Olmesartan passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before taking this medication if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or if you become pregnant while taking this medication. There may be a drug interaction between Benicar HCT (Olmesartan/Hydrochlorothiazide) and other medications such as aliskiren, dofetilide, lithium, etc. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all of the medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and herbal supplements.
