Description

Generic Name: rotigotine

Drug Class: dopamine agonist

Neupro Patch Uses

Neupro is a prescription patch indicated to treat the signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It enhances one’s ability to move while decreasing stiffness, tremors, instability, and slow movement. It is also used to treat moderate-severe restless legs syndrome.

Neupro Patch Dosage Forms

This is available in Neupro 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 4mg, 6mg, and 8mg transdermal system per 24 hours.

Neupro Patch Mechanism of Action

The exact mechanism of this non-ergoline dopamine agonist is unknown. However, it is thought to have the ability to stimulate dopamine receptors in the brain. Through this, the balance of dopamine can be restored.

How to Use Neupro

Before using this patch, it is necessary to read the patient information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. Before using this patch, make sure you understand its purpose and directions. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice.

This patch must only be applied to intact skin. Apply it in a dry and hairless area on the front of the abdomen, flank, hip, thigh, shoulder, and upper arm. Remember to apply the patch to different areas. Do not apply the patch to the same area within 14 days to prevent skin irritation. Do not increase or decrease your Neupro dosage or use it more frequently than recommended.

Step-by-step Guide on using Neupro Patch

  1. Choose the area or site where you will apply the patch and wash your hands properly.
  2. Remove the patch from the protective pouch by pulling it apart to separate the two sides. Never cut the patch into smaller portions.
  3. Hold the patch using both your hands, the protective liner on top. Bend the sides of the transdermal patch away from you until the S-shaped cut in the middle opens up.
  4. Peel off half of the liner. Do not touch the medicated part.
  5. Apply the medicated part to the area and carefully remove the remaining liner.
  6. Press the patch firmly onto your skin using the palm of your hands for about 30 seconds. The warmth of the hands will help the adhesive stick to the skin better.
  7. Wash your hands again after application.

Do not use this patch if you have a known allergic reaction to rotigotine, sulfites, or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Always be watchful for any serious allergy symptoms, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. Seek emergency medical help immediately if any of those occurs.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, and mental or mood disorders.
