Imitrex is a medicine used to treat headaches.  It works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain and reduces substances in the body that may trigger headache pain, sensitivity to light, nausea, and other migraine symptoms. Imitrex comes in tablets and nasal spray and will only treat a migraine that has already begun.  Imitrex cannot prevent headaches from occurring or reduce the number of migraine attacks.

Store Imitrex away from moisture, heat, and light at room temperate.  Keep this medication away from children and pets.

Do not use Imitrex without informing your doctor if you have certain conditions like epilepsy or other seizure disorder, high blood pressure, liver disease, kidney disease, or coronary artery disease.  Some medicines will react with Imitrex. Tell your doctor about and prescription, non prescription, herbal,or supplemental medicine that you use.

Imitrex is a medication that treats migraines when symptoms occur.  Imitrex will not prevent or reduce the number of recurring migraine attacks. Always leave at least 2 hours in between Imitrex doses.  Do no use Imitrex within 24 hours before or after taking any of these medicines: almotriptan (Axert), eletriptan (Relpax), Frovatriptan (Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt-MLT), or zolmitriptan (zomig), or ergo medicine like Sansert, Ergomar, Ergostat, Cafergot, Ercaf, Wigraine, Migranal Nasal spray, Ergotrate, or Methergine.  Imitrex may cause side effects which can impair your thinking or reactions.  Be cautious when driving or doing anything that could be dangerous.  Antidepressants may also react with the medicine in Imitrex.  Tell your doctor about any medications you use before using Imitrex.

Patient Family Information  : Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed to you.  Do not take Imitrex in larger or smaller amounts that prescribed, or use it for longer than advised by a doctor.  Take Imitrex as soon as you notice symptoms of a migraine headache.  Your doctor may want you to take your first dose in a  hospital or clinic to make sure you do not have any serious side effects or an allergic reaction.  Swallow one Imitrex tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not take a split or broken tablet.  If your headache does not completely go away after taking the tablet, take another tablet two hours after the first tablet.  Do not take more than 200mg of Imitrex tablets in one day.  If your symptoms do not improve, inform your doctor before taking another dose of Imitrex.  Imirex nasal spray comes with instructions for safe use.  Carefully follow these directions and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Do not use Imitrex if you are allergic to sumatriptan.  Do not use if you have a history of heart disease, angina, blood circulation problems, or a history of heart attack of stroke, ischemic bowel disease, severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure, or severe liver disease.  If you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor in the past 14 days, do not take Imitrex. Do not use this medication without informing your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.  It may cause harm to a fetus or breastfeeding baby.  This medication is not to be used by anyone under the age of 18 or over the age of 65.

Sever Side Effects : Seek emergency help if you have signs of an allergic reaction including hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.

Contact your doctor if you experience any serious side effects such as: chest pain, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feelings.  Sudden headaches, confusion, problems with vision or speech, trouble balancing, fast heartbeat, agitation, stiff muscles, hallucinations, lack of coordination, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizure, numbing or tingling and pale blue skin on your toes or fingers.

Less serious side effects: nausea, vomting, diarrhea, muscle pain, warmth or redness under the skin, a heavy feeling of pressure on any part of the body, cold-like symptoms, burning, numbness, or pain in your nose after using the nasal spray, odd taste in the mouth, dizziness, sleepiness, drooling or sweating.
