Usage

Salofalk suppositories (Mesalamine/5-aminosalicylic acid) are a prescription medication used to treat inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis. The active ingredient in Salofalk suppositories is Mesalamine. Mesalamine is also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid. Mesalamine belongs to a class of drugs called anti-inflammatory agents. It works by stopping the body from producing hormones that may cause inflammation.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Salofalk suppositories are back pain, bright red blood in stool, bloody or cloudy urine, dizziness, fast heartbeat, and fever.

Stop using Salofalk suppositories and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bloating;
• Constipation;
• Dizziness;
• Excess air or gas in the Stomach or bowels;
• Flatulence;

For best results, empty your bowels before using Salofalk suppositories. Do not take the medication by mouth. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after inserting this drug. You can use a lubricating gel to make the suppository easier to insert. Salofalk suppositories must remain in your body for 1 to 3 hours or longer, depending on your doctor's advice. Do not use the bathroom for that length of time after inserting the suppository. Drink enough water when using this drug to urinate more often and prevent kidney problems. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, except it is time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Before you start using Salofalk suppositories, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Allergy to salicyclates or aminosalicyclates;
• Allergy to sulfasalazine;
• Heart disease;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Skin problems like atopic dermatitis;
• Stomach blockage

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Salofalk suppositories pass into your breast milk. This medication may cause diarrhoea in nursing babies. The effectiveness of Salofalk suppositories in children is not established. There may be a drug interaction between Salofalk suppositories and other drugs such as aldesleukin, azathioprine, carbamazepine, cyclosporine, and folic acid. Avoid using lenalidomide, obinutuzumab, warfarin, or tacrolimus with Salofalk suppositories.
