Prometrium (Progesterone) belongs to the group of medications called progestins. Progesterone is used in combination with postmenopausal estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) to prevent the estrogen from thickening the lining of the uterus. This reduces the risk of cancer of the uterus. This medication is also used to restore normal menstrual periods that have stopped for several months in women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause.

Manufacturer Information

We currently have the brand 100mg from Canada manufactured by Schering. The generic comes from India (also called Susten by Sun Pharma) and Turkey (also called Progestan) and is available in the strengths of 100mg, 200mg, 300mg and 400mg.

Side effects include:

• Abdominal pain or cramping;
• Bloating or swelling of ankles or feet;
• Dizziness;
• Drowsiness;
• Hot flashes;
• Mood changes;
• Pain in the breast or tenderness;
• Trouble sleeping

Do not take this medication if you are allergic to progesterone. This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as peanut oil), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Before you start taking this medication, inform your doctor about your medical history and also about all the prescription, OTC and herbal medications you are currently taking. This medication may make you dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires alertness. Do not smoke while you are on this medication because it will increase your risk for blood clots. This medication passes into breast milk, talk to your doctor before you breast-feed.
