Usage

Zaroxolyn (Metolazone) is a prescription medicine used to treat excessive fluid accumulation (edema) in people with congestive cardiac failure or renal diseases such as nephrotic syndrome. It is also used in treating hypertension in combination with other antihypertensive medications. The active ingredient in Zaroxolyn is Metolazone. Metolazone belongs to the class of drugs called thiazide-like diuretics. It works by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in distal tubules, causing increased excretion of water (urine) and sodium, potassium, and hydrogen ions. As a result, lowering blood pressure helps prevent complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure.

The common side effects of Zaroxolyn are dizziness (light-headedness), headaches, muscle cramps, fatigue, joint pain, swelling, chest pain, extremities, edema, orthostatic hypotension, and palpitations.

Stop using Zaroxolyn and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A light-headed feeling, like you, might pass out;
• Chest pain;
• Chronic abdominal pain that worsens while lying but relieves on leaning forward may point to pancreatitis;

Do not take more or less of it or more often than your doctor prescribes it.

Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Metolazone and gradually increase your dose, depending on your response to this medication. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to get pregnant, or breastfeed a child. Therefore, it would be best if you did not breastfeed while treating your hypertension with Zaroxolyn.
