Diabeta (Glyburide) is a prescription oral diabetes medication that helps control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This medication is combined with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar. Glyburide belongs to the class of drugs called sulfonylureas. It works by causing the pancreas to release your body’s natural insulin. You may help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems by controlling high blood sugar. Diabeta may be used with other diabetes medication to control blood sugar. Diabeta is taken with breakfast or the first main meal of the day usually once daily or as directed by your doctor.

The common side effects of Diabeta may include heartburn, nausea, stomach fullness and weight gain.
Inform your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Dark urine;
• Easy bleeding or bruising;
• Mental or mood changes;
• Seizures;
• Signs of infection;
• Stomach pain;
• Swelling of hands or feet;
• Unusual sudden weight gain;
• Unusual tiredness or weakness;
• Yellowing eyes or skin

You should not take Diabeta if you are allergic to Glyburide or if you have any other allergies. You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Limit alcohol while taking this medication because it can increase the risk of developing low blood sugar. Diabeta should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. Talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding.
