Description

Generic Name: mometasone furoate monohydrate

Drug Class: corticosteroid

Indications

Nasonex is a nasal prescription spray used to treat nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis. It is also used to treat and prevent nasal congestion due to seasonal allergic rhinitis. It’s also used to treat nasal polyps.

Nasonex Dosage

This is available in the form of Nasonex 50 mcg nasal spray.

Nasonex Mechanism of Action

The exact action of this nasal spray is still unknown. However, it is thought to have a wide range of effects on multiple cell types and mediators that are responsible for inflammation. It reduces swelling in nasal passages.

How to Use Nasonex

Before starting to use this medication, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not use any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details.

This is usually prescribed once a day for rhinitis and twice a day for nasal polyps. If you are using it for seasonal allergy, it is best to start taking it 2 to 4 weeks prior to pollen season. Make a dosing schedule so you will not miss your doses. Do not increase/decrease your Nasonex dosage or use this spray more frequently than prescribed.

Step-by-step guide on how to use Nasonex:

  1. Remove the cap of the nasal spray bottle and prime the nasal spray by pushing the shoulder of the applicator down 10 times or until a fine spray appears. Do not spray it on your eyes. (Note: If the product has been unused for a week or more, re-prime it by spraying it two times or until the fine mist appears.)
  2. Blow your nose and ensure your nostrils are clear.
  3. Close one of your nostrils by gently pressing it with a finger. Lean your head slightly forward and with the bottle in an upright position, insert the applicator in the other nostril.
  4. Use your thumb to support or hold the bottom of the bottle. Then, hold the shoulder of the applicator using the middle and index fingers. Push the shoulder fully in a downward motion to release the mist.
  5. Breath out through your mouth.
  6. Repeat the procedure in the other nostril.
  7. After the sprays in each nostril, wipe the nasal spray using tissue and replace the cap.
