Usage

Colazal (Balsalazide) is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis in adults and children who are at least 5 years old. The active substance in Colazal is Balsalazide. Balsalazide belongs to the group of drugs called 5-Aminosalicylic Acid Derivatives. It works by reducing bowel inflammation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain in the lining of the intestines.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Colazal are headache, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, sore throat, trouble sleeping, or loss of appetite.

Stop using Colazal and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bleeding through the anus or passage of blood stained stool (hematochezia or melaena);
• Painful urination;
• Severe abdominal pain;
• Worsening of your condition

Warnings and Interactions

If you are breastfeeding, tell your doctor if you notice diarrhea in the nursing baby. There may be a drug interaction between Colazal and other drugs such as dichlorphenamide, fenoprofen, hydrochlorothiazide, naproxen, oxaprozin, etc. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
