Indications

Monopril is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

The active ingredient in Monopril is fosinopril sodium. It works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily.

Use and Dosage

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium can decrease the absorption of fosinopril. If you are taking an antacid that contains aluminum or magnesium, take it at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking this product.

Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high blood pressure do not feel sick.

For the treatment of high blood pressure, it may take several weeks before you get the full benefit of this medication. For the treatment of heart failure, it may take weeks to months before you get the full benefit of this medication. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens (such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase).

Side Effects

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives, severe stomach pain, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Serious side effects include:

  • A light-headed feeling, like you might pass out
  • Kidney problems–swelling, urinating less, or feeling tired or short of breath
  • Low white blood cell counts–fever, mouth sores, skin sores, sore throat, or cough
  • High blood potassium–nausea, weakness, tingly feeling, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, or loss of movement
  • Liver problems–loss of appetite, stomach pain (upper right side), tiredness, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

Common side effects of fosinopril may include:

  • Chest pain, cough, or runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or joint pain or weakness
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Dizziness or low blood pressure

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.

Cautions

Before taking fosinopril, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other ACE inhibitors (such as benazepril); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially: a history of an allergic reaction which included swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat (angioedema), blood filtering procedures (such as LDL apheresis, dialysis), high level of potassium in the blood.

This drug may make you dizzy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you dizzier. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).

To reduce the risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position.

Too much sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may cause dehydration and increase your risk of lightheadedness. Report prolonged diarrhea or vomiting to your doctor. Be sure to drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration unless your doctor directs you otherwise.

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

This product may increase your potassium levels. Before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, including dizziness and increases in potassium levels.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. You should not become pregnant while using fosinopril. Fosinopril may harm an unborn baby. If you become pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of this medication. Consult your doctor for more details. (See also Warning section.)

This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy.
