Avalide is a combination medication used to control high blood pressure. The medication contains both Irbesartan and Hydrochlorothiazide. Irbesartan helps relax blood vessels. Hydrochlorothiazide, or HCTZ helps rid your body of excess water and salt.
Avalide is manufactured by a company called Sanofi-Aventis and we offer it in these dosages: 150/12.5 mg, 300/12.5 mg and 300/25 mg. The generic Avalide tablets, sold as Irbesartan/HCTZ are also available in the same strength, but by produced by different manufacturers. The generic of this medication we have available from Canada.

Uses
Avalide is a combination of irbesartan, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic, indicated for hypertension:
- In patients not adequately controlled with monotherapy.
- As initial therapy in patients likely to need multiple drugs to achieve their blood pressure goals.
Dosage
There are oral tablets available in several different strengths:
- 150 mg irbesartan/12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide tablets
- 300 mg irbesartan/12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide tablets
Side Effects
The most common side effects of Avalide include:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Musculoskeletal pain

Precautions
Hypotension: Correct volume-depletion prior to administration.
Impaired renal function.
Thiazide diuretics may cause an exacerbation or activation of systemic lupus erythematosus.

- Avalide can cause lightheadedness, especially during the first days of use. Inform your physician if you feel lightheaded or faint. If fainting occurs, stop using Avalide and contact the prescribing doctor.
- Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium without consulting their healthcare provider.
- Discontinue Avalide and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of Acute Myopia or Secondary Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Can I take this with food?
Avalide can be taken with or without food.
Can I take this if I am pregnant?
When pregnancy is detected, discontinue Avalide as soon as possible. Drugs that act directly on the renin-angiotensin system can cause injury and death to the developing fetus.
Can I take this while breastfeeding?
It is not known whether irbesartan is excreted in human milk, but irbesartan or some metabolite of irbesartan is secreted at low concentration in the milk of lactating rats. Thiazides appear in human milk. Because of the potential for adverse effects on the nursing infant, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium without consulting their healthcare provider.
Can Avalide cause eye problems?
This drug can cause certain eye problems. If left untreated, this can lead to lasting eyesight loss. If eye problems happen, signs like change in eyesight or eye pain most often happen within hours to weeks of starting this drug. Call your doctor right away if you have these signs.
