Product Details

Tiazac (Diltiazem ER) are long-acting tablets used to treat high blood pressure and control chest pain (angina). It’s in a category of medications called calcium-channel blockers and it works by relaxing the blood vessels, so the heart doesn’t have to pump as hard. It also increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart.

Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, tiredness, or weakness. While it is rare, some people may have very bad and sometimes deadly side effects while on Tiazac. The serious side effects may include:

• Abnormal heartbeat that is new or worse
• Bad skin reaction (Stevens-Johnson syndrome / toxic epidermal necrolysis)
• Heart failure
• Signs of allergic reaction:
o Hives
o Difficulty breathing
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
• Signs of liver problems
• Slow heartbeat
• Very bad dizziness or passing out

You should not use Tiazac if you are allergic to Diltiazem ER or if you have a serious heart condition, very low blood pressure, or if you recently had a heart attack or have build-up of fluid on the lungs. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Tiazac should only be used during pregnancy when the benefit outweighs the risk for the unborn baby. It is not recommended pregnant or nursing women take Tiazac, as it can increase the risk of embryolethality and/or stillbirths. It can be excreted in breastmilk.

Precautions

Follow your doctor’s advice and follow all medication guidelines for your medication. Use it exactly as prescribed. Do not take in larger or smaller dosages or for longer than recommended. Do not crush, break, chew, or open your tablet or capsule—swallow it whole. Take regularly to get the most benefit. You should not stop this medication suddenly, or your condition could worsen. Store Tiazac at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

There may be an interaction between Tiazac and other medications including anesthesia medications, antianxiety drugs, beta-blockers, carbamazepine, cimetidine, clonidine, digitalis, quinidine, rifampin, or cholesterol meds. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Tiazac. To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• A recent heart attack
• Congestive heart failure
• If you take digoxin or a beta-blocker
• If you take ivabradine or rifampin
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease
• Low blood pressure

Questions and Answers

1. I have been taking Tiazac for a while now but haven’t seen my symptoms improve. What should I do?
Answer: If your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse, it’s time to go in and speak with your doctor.

2. Does it matter what time of day I take Tiazac?
Answer: As long as you are consistent with when you take your Tiazac, it doesn’t matter if it’s night or morning. To get the best benefit from this medication, take it at the same time every day.

3. Can I drink alcohol while on Tiazac?
Answer: It’s best to avoid alcohol while taking Tiazac. In addition to raising your blood pressure, alcohol can increase unwanted side effects.
