Description

Generic Name: saxagliptin

Drug Class: dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitor

Indications

Onglyza is an oral prescription drug used to improve glycemic control among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is prescribed together with proper diet and exercise. It is not indicated for type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis.

Dosage Forms

Onglyza Mechanism of Action

It inactivates incretin hormones, like glucagon-like peptide-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide. Then, it increases the concentration of the DPP4 enzyme in the blood and lessens fasting and postprandial glucose levels in a glucose-dependent manner.
