Maxitrol Eye (Neomycin, Polymyxin B, Dexamethasone) is a combination medication that is used to treat eye inflammation caused by uveitis, eye injury, radiation, chemical burns, or certain other conditions. It may also be used when there is a risk of bacterial infection in or around the eye. Maxitrol Eye may also be used for other conditions not listed above. Maxitrol Eye contains 3 medications, neomycin, polymyxin B, and dexamethasone. Neomycin is an antibiotic that belongs to a class of medications called aminoglycosides, which work by stopping the production of proteins that bacteria need to survive. Polymyxin B belongs to a class of medications called bactericidal agents, and works by attacking the outer membrane of bacteria cells, preventing replication and causing cell death. Dexamethasone belongs to a class of medications called corticosteroids, and works by interfering with the body's normal immune response, and blocking the release of substances that cause inflammation in the body. Together, these medications can help to reduce inflammation around the eye and prevent infections.
