Product Details

Carafate (Sucralfate) is a prescription anti-ulcer medication that is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the intestines. This medication may also be used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach and to prevent ulcers caused by aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs. Sucralfate works by forming a coating over ulcers to protect them from acids, enzymes and bile salts. This will help the ulcers to heal more quickly.

Carafate Side Effects and Precautions

The serious Carafate side effects may include difficulty swallowing, nausea or vomiting or stomach pain especially after meals, unusual or persistent feeling of fullness in the stomach. The common side effects of Carafate may include:
• Back pain;
• Constipation;
• Dry mouth;
• Gas;
• Headache;
• Nausea;
• Sleep problems;
• Upset stomach

You should not take Carafate if you are allergic to Sucralfate or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. The function of the kidney declines as you grow older. Elderly people may be at a greater risk of developing high aluminum levels while using this medication. Before you start using Sucralfate, inform your doctor if you are pregnant. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be an interaction between Carafate and other medications such as tetracyclines, digoxin, ketoconazole, penicillamine, quinidine, thyroid medications, and theophylline, etc.
