What is Fetzima? 

Fetzima (Levomilnacipran) is a prescription medication that helps with the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). It belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant (SNRI), which works by boosting the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the body to improve symptoms of MDD and improve feelings of well-being and happiness. 

Fetzima Precautions 

Before using Fetzima, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication, or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions: 

  • Heart Problems 
  • Kidney Problems 
  • Liver Problems
  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma
  • Mood or Mental Disorder
  • Suicide Attempts
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Poor Blood Flow to the Brain
  • Urinary Retention
  • Seizures (Convulsions)
  • Mineral Imbalance 

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience blurry vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects. 

Before undergoing surgery, make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Fetzima. 

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Fetzima. 

Geriatric patients are at an increased risk of developing hyponatremia or low levels of sodium in the blood, especially if the patient is taking diuretics or water pills. 

You must not take Fetzima 7 days before or 14 days after you have administered an MAO inhibitor, such as tranylcypromine, selegiline, rasagiline, phenelzine, methylene blue injection, linezolid, and isocarboxazid. 

Sudden withdrawal from Fetzima is not recommended as it can cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, such as relapse from depression, tingling or electric shock feelings, confusion, and agitation. Consult your healthcare provider regarding the proper withdrawal procedure from this medication. 

This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy as it poses harm to an unborn baby. The baby may develop feeding or breathing difficulties, muscle stiffness, constant crying, and seizures (convulsions). Consulting your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of using this medication while pregnant.  

It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. 

This medication is not recommended to be taken by patients younger than 18 years old. 

Fetzima Side Effects 

The common side effects of Fetzima include nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased sweating, dizziness, drowsiness, irregular heartbeat, difficulty having an orgasm, decreased sex drive, impotence, and nose bleeds. Stop using Fetzima, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

  • Decreased Need for Sleep

A severe and serious condition called serotonin syndrome or toxicity may occur while taking Fetzima, especially when you are taking other medications that increase serotonin in your brain. Seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing symptoms, such as irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, twitching muscles, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, unexplained fever, unexplained agitation, or restlessness. 

This medication puts you at an increased risk of high blood pressure (hypertension). Monitor your blood pressure and heart rate regularly and share the results with your doctor if they are too high.

Fetzima Dosage 

Follow your healthcare provider’s directions concerning the prescribed dose for your medical condition. Fetzima medication comes in one dosage form, which is a capsule, and comes in four dosage strengths, which are 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg, and 120 mg. 

It is advisable to take this medication at the same time each day to help you remember to take it. This medication can be taken with or without food.  

For the treatment of major depressive disorder, the recommended starting dose is 20 mg, taken orally once daily for 2 days. You may increase the dose to 40 mg, taken orally once daily after. The maximum dosage is 120 mg per day. The dosage range is 40 mg to 120 mg per day. 

This medication must be stored at 25°C (77°F), in a clean, dry place. This medication must be kept away from children and pets’ reach.

Can I take Fetzima for anxiety? 

Fetzima is not approved as a medication for anxiety, but it is sometimes used as an off-label medication. Consult your healthcare provider for alternative anxiety medications. 

Does Fetzima cause weight gain? 

No. Clinical studies show evidence that Fetzima does not cause weight gain in patients taking it. Weight changes in patients taking this medication have been concluded to be similar to those taking a placebo.

50% of the reports claiming they experienced hair loss while taking Fetzima have been taking it for 1 to 6 months, while the other 50% have been taking it for 1 to 2 years.
