Fosamax uses

This medication uses the active ingredient alendronate sodium to prevent loss of bone density and re-grow bone tissue. Fosamax is prescribed in those who have developed osteoporosis and other types of diseases that cause bone loss.

Although Fosamax treats and reverses the symptoms of osteoporosis, your doctor may recommend habitual adjustments alongside your treatment. Healthy lifestyles are the best way to heal from many diseases and get the most out of your medication. If you smoke, your doctor may recommend that you quit and provide assistance and access to resources that will help you. An unhealthy diet and lack of proper exercise can also increase bone loss, and your doctor will be able to guide you with these as well.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that affects bones. Contrary to what bones are often thought of, the skeleton is made up of organic tissues comprised of living cells. The cells in this tissue are constantly dying and being reproduced. Bone cells need minerals such as calcium and phosphorus to remain strong and retain structural integrity. When bone cells die off, their calcium is reabsorbed to be reused, in a process known as bone resorption.

Osteoporosis occurs when the rate of bone resorption is faster than the rate at which new bone cells can grow. Fosamax works by increasing the rate at which bone cells grow while reducing the rate at which calcium is reabsorbed, which can prevent fractures and reverse the effects of osteoporosis.

Who should not take Fosamax?

Fosamax can have side effects in some cases that have dangerous implications in those with specific health conditions. Tell your doctor about your medical history before using Fosamax, especially of; disorders of the esophagus, troubles swallowing properly, difficulty standing for 30 mins, low calcium, kidney, stomach, or intestinal problems; any dental issues including gum disease or cancer, diabetes, nicotine or alcohol abuse, or anemia. If any of these apply to you, there may be risks associated with Fosamax and it may be necessary to treat the other condition first or take precautionary measures such as dental check-ups.

Pregnant, soon-to-be-pregnant women, nursing women, and young children should not take this medication.

Boniva vs Fosamax

Boniva is a similar medication to this medication, but there are enough differences that it may be a better medication for some. Unlike Fosamax, Boniva only needs to be taken once a month, which makes it a more enticing option for many.
