Nardil is a medication prescribed to people who are suffering from depression and have not responded well to other medications. Keep Nardil at room temperature and protect from heat, moisture and light.Always follow the directions given to you by your doctor when taking Nardil. Nardil may be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking Nardil even if you feel better, unless instructed by your doctor. Avoid the use of Nardil if: you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication; you have a history of alcohol abuse or stroke; you have heart disease, blood vessel disease in the brain, congestive heart failure, schizophrenia, severe headaches, liver problems, abnormal liver function tests, high blood pressure, severe kidney problems, severely decreased kidney function, or adrenal gland tumor; you will be having surgery; you eat food with a high tyramine content, drink alcohol, or consume large quantities of caffeine; you are taking an amphetamine, an anesthetic, an anorexiant, an antihistamine, apraclonidine, brimonidine, bupropion, buspirone, carbamazepine, cyclobenzaprine, dextromethorphan, dibenzazepine, a diuretic, entacapone, an herbal product, indoramin, levodopa, meperidine, methylphenidate, a narcotic, nefazodone, other medicines for Parkinson’s disease, papaverine, a sedative, a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, sibutramine, a sympathomimetic, a tetracyclic antidepressant, tolcapone, tramadol, a tricyclic antidepressant, or a triptan; you have taken an MAOI or a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor within the last 14 days; or you have taken fluoxetine within the past 5 weeks. Let your doctor know of any medical conditions, especially if you have any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding; if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances; if you have asthma, bipolar mood disorder, bronchitis, an irregular heartbeat, diabetes, epilepsy, an overactive thyroid, Parkinson’s disease, the blood disease porphyria, kidney problems, suicidal thoughts or behaviors.Nardil may cause you to experience drowsiness or dizziness, do not drive, operate machinery, or participate in anything that may become dangerous until you know how you react to Nardil. Avoid consuming alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness as this may increase chances of side effects. You may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting when taking Nardil. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever may increase these side effects, always sit or stand up slowly. Children, teenagers, and young adults who are using Nardil may have an increased risk for suicidal thoughts or actions. Contact your doctor if you or someone else notices any changes in your mood or behavior. Avoid large amounts of food or drink that have caffeine. Nardil may cause serious increases in blood pressure if certain foods are eaten. Avoid eating foods such as, aged cheeses, sour cream, red wines, beer, bologna, pepperoni, salami, summer sausage, pickled herring, liver, meat prepared with tenderizers, canned figs, raisins, bananas, avocados, soy sauce, fava beans, or yeast extracts. Let your doctor or dentist know you are taking Nardil before any dental care, emergency care, or surgery. Nardil may affect blood sugar levels, and those with diabetes must pay extra attention to the blood sugar levels. Use caution when giving Nardil to the elderly as they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medication. Nardil should not be used in children younger than 16 years old as the safety and effectiveness for this age group have not been confirmed.
