Maxalt Information

Maxalt Details (Brand and Generic)

CanadaPharmacyOnline.com offers the brand Maxalt from the United Kingdom and Canada by Merck. The generic Rizatriptan is available from India (Rizact) by Cipla, from Canada (Act Rizatriptan) by Actavis and from the United Kingdom by a different manufacturer. Our customers may also purchase other migraine medications such as Relpax and Amerge.

Dosage

Maxalt and the generic Rizatriptan are both available in the strength of 5 mg and 10 mg tablets.

Usage

Maxalt (Rizatriptan) is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches with or without aura in patients 6 years or older. Rizatriptan belongs to a class of antimigraine drugs known as triptans. This medication works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain. It also reduces substances in the body that can trigger the symptoms of migraine such as headache, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms. Maxalt will only treat a migraine headache that has already begun; it will not prevent migraine headaches or reduce the frequency of the attacks. Maxalt may help improve your quality of life by reducing the burden caused by migraine. Appropriate use of Maxalt may also reduce your need for other pain medications.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Maxalt may include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue and pain or a feeling of pressure in your throat or chest. Stop using Maxalt and call your doctor right away if you have:
• Dangerously high blood pressure;
• High levels of serotonin in the body – nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, fever, fast heart rate, coordination problems, fainting;
• Unusual numbness in your hands and feet, cold feeling;
• Signs of a stroke – sudden weakness and numbness on one side of the body, coordination problems, severe headache, slurred speech, vision problems;
• Symptoms of a heart attack – sudden severe pain spreading to the jaw or shoulder, chest pain or chest pressure, nausea, sweating, anxiety;
• Sudden severe stomach pain and bloody diarrhea

The above information is a summary and may not contain all the side effect information. If you still have questions about side effects, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist so they can address all your concerns.

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Maxalt if you are allergic to Rizatriptan, or if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. Some examples of MAO inhibitors are phenelzine, isocarboxazid, linezolid, selegiline. Maxalt may not be safe for you or if you have:
• A blood vessel disorder or circulation problems such ischemic bowel disease;
• A headache that's different from your usual migraine headaches;
• A history of heart problems (coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, or stroke);
• Past or present heart problems;
• Severe or uncontrolled high blood pressure

Before you start using Maxalt, tell your doctor if you have:
• A condition for which you take propranolol;
• Coronary heart disease;
• A heart rhythm disorder;
• High blood pressure;
• Liver or kidney disease

You should not take Maxalt within 24 hours before or after using another migraine medication like Rizatriptan (almotriptan, eletriptan, frovatriptan, sumatriptan), and ergot medications. This medication may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal medications, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Rizatriptan and other medications that can increase the serotonin levels in the body such as medication to treat depression, medication to treat psychiatric disorder, anti-nausea medication. Ergotamine medications and other “triptans” can also interact with Maxalt. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to conceive, or breast-feeding. Maxalt should not be used by anyone younger than 6 years old.
