Glucotrol XL Uses

Glucotrol XL, with the generic name glipizide, is an oral extended-release medication indicated to treat adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, together with proper diet and exercise. It helps in improving glycemic control or decreasing high blood glucose levels. By controlling diabetes, complications like blindness, loss of limbs, sexual dysfunction, kidney damage, stroke, and heart attack can be prevented.

This is available in Glucotrol XL 10 mg, 5 mg, and 2.5 mg extended-release tablets.

Glucotrol XL Mechanism of Action

This medication is classified as a sulfonylurea, which is an insulin secretagogue. It stimulates the release of insulin from the beta cells of the pancreas, which increases the plasma concentration of insulin. Apart from this, its blood glucose-lowering action involves increased peripheral glucose utilization by stimulating hepatic gluconeogenesis and increasing the sensitivity and number of insulin receptors.

Remember to take this diabetes drug regularly and exactly as directed. Plan your doses beforehand to avoid forgetting them. s. If you are prescribed colesevelam, administer it at least 4 hours after taking this medication because colesevelam can decrease the absorption of glipizide.

Do not alter your Glucotrol XL dosage as it is based on your medical condition, other drugs you are taking, and response to treatment. Also, you should not stop taking this medication abruptly or even for a short while to avoid worsening conditions.
