Welchol is a medication used to lower cholesterol. It is also used to lower high blood sugar in people who have type 2 diabetes. This medication is sometimes used together with other cholesterol-lower medications to be more effective. Keeping LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and blood glucose levels lower can reduce the risk of hardened arteries, which leads to heart attacks, stroke, and other circulatory problems. It also protects kidney damage, blindness, loss of limbs and sexual function.

Contact your doctor right away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

o Difficulty breathing;
o Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat;
• Severe constipation or stomach pain;
Less serious side effects to watch for include:
• Mild constipation;
• Nausea;
• Vomiting;
• Upset stomach;
• Indigestion;
• Feeling weak or tired;
• Muscle pain;
• Runny nose;
• Sore throat;
• Flu-like symptoms
Customer Precautions
Patients with a history of bowel obstruction, high levels of triglycerides, or those who have ever had pancreatitis caused by high triglycerides should not take Welchol. To make sure this medication is safe for you, be sure to tell your doctor if you have trouble swallowing, any stomach, intestinal, or digestive disorders, a history of major stomach or bowel surgery, or if you have a vitamin A, D, E, or K deficiency. This medication can make it harder to absorb vitamins and minerals. Welchol should not be given to anyone younger than 10 years old, nor girls who have not yet started their menstrual periods. This medication is not expected to harm an unborn infant, however, be sure to tell your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing.
