Indications
Dipentum is a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis in adults. It contains the active ingredient olsalazine, which is a prodrug converted to two molecules of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) by colonic bacteria.
Dipentum does not cure ulcerative colitis but may decrease symptoms and prevent flare-ups.
Use and Dosage
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually twice a day about 12 hours apart. Take with food or after meals to prevent stomach upset. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.
Drink plenty of fluids during treatment with this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor. This will help prevent kidney stones.
Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day. Tell your doctor if your condition does not get better or if it gets worse.
Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).
Stop using olsalazine and seek medical treatment if you have a serious drug reaction that can affect many parts of your body. Symptoms may include skin rash, fever, swollen glands, muscle aches, severe weakness, unusual bruising, or yellowing of your skin or eyes.
Olsalazine may cause serious side effects. Stop using Olsalazine and call your doctor at once if you have:
- Worsening colitis (fever, stomach pain, cramping, or bloody diarrhea)
Also, call your doctor at once if you have:
- Severe or ongoing diarrhea
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or fast or pounding heartbeats
- Low blood cell counts–fever, chills, tiredness, mouth sores, skin sores, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, pale skin, cold hands and feet, or feeling light-headed
- Liver problems–loss of appetite, stomach pain (upper right side), itching, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
- Kidney problems–swelling, urinating less, or feeling short of breath
- Signs of a kidney stone–pain in your side or lower back, blood in your urine, or painful or difficult urination
Common side effects of olsalazine may include:
- Diarrhea or stomach pain
- Rash or itching

Cautions
Before taking olsalazine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to aspirin or related drugs (salicylates such as mesalamine, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, balsalazide, sulfasalazine); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: asthma, growths in the nose (nasal polyps), kidney problems, liver problems, and radiation treatment in the pelvic area.
This medicine may cause stomach bleeding. Daily use of alcohol may increase your risk of stomach bleeding, especially when combined with this medicine. Check with your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
This medication is similar to aspirin. Children and teenagers younger than 18 years should not take aspirin or aspirin-related medications (such as salicylates) if they have chickenpox, flu, or any undiagnosed illness, or if they have just been given a live virus vaccine (such as varicella vaccine), without first consulting a doctor about Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious illness.
This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Tell your doctor right away if you get sunburned or have skin blisters/redness.
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
During pregnancy, this drug should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
