Bonefos (Clodronate Disodium)

Indications

Bonefos is a medication primarily used to treat hypercalcemia (high blood calcium) in people who have cancer. It can be used to reduce the occurrence of bone metastases in the post-surgical (adjuvant) treatment of breast cancer.

Bonefos contains the active ingredient clodronate, which is a bone metabolism regulator. It belongs to a family of drugs known as bisphosphonates.

Clodronate works by stopping calcium from being released from bones, which helps to reduce high calcium levels in the blood. Use and Dosage

Bonefos is available in capsule form to take orally usually once or twice a day. It should be swallowed whole without chewing, on an empty stomach, while sitting upright, with a glass of plain water, at least 2 hours before or after food.

Do not take Bonefos capsules with milk, and to avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication to prevent any irritation to the esophagus, which is the tube connecting the mouth and the stomach.

The recommended dosage for Bonefos varies depending on the specific condition being treated. However, the usual recommended dosage is 1,600 mg to 2,400 mg daily given as a single daily dose or as 2 divided doses. The maximum recommended daily dose is 3,200 mg. Your doctor may adjust your dose depending on how well this medication is working for you.

Take Bonefos capsules exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
