Indications

Tri Luma is a topical medication used to treat symptoms of facial melasma including the appearance of dark spots.

This cream combines fluocinolone (a topical corticosteroid), hydroquinone (a depigmenting drug), and tretinoin (a retinoid) to reduce dark spots and improve your facial melasma. Fluocinolone reduces skin inflammation and helps prevent irritation from the other ingredients. Hydroquinone affects your melanin to lighten and even the appearance of your skin while tretinoin helps protect and strengthen your skin.

Cautions

Tri Luma cream is approved for short-term treatment of mild to moderate facial melasma to improve the appearance of dark spots. Do not use this medicated face cream as a maintenance therapy or for longer than 8 weeks.

Tri Luma cream contains a sulfite that may cause some people to develop allergic-type reactions including anaphylaxis, life-threatening asthmatic episodes, or other hypersensitivity reactions. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience any similar reactions.

Tri Luma may cause your skin to gradually darken blue-black during treatment, a reaction which should improve after you stop using this medication.

Tri Luma may lead to the development of reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression which could lead to Cushing’s syndrome, hyperglycemia, and glucosuria. If you notice signs of this condition, stop using this medication and contact your healthcare provider.

Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment with this medication. Tri Luma cream may cause harm or even death to an unborn child if used during pregnancy.

Ask your healthcare provider before using Tri Luma cream while breastfeeding. It is unclear how this medication may affect your nursing child. Make sure that your nursing child does not come into contact with this medicated face cream.

Avoid direct exposure to sunlight during treatment with Tri Luma because the medication can make your skin burn more easily. Dark spots may also darken more if you are exposed to sunlight for too long which can worsen your melasma condition.

Skin areas treated with Tri Luma may react more to heat and cold than sections of skin that are not treated. Sudden changes in temperature may aggravate your melasma condition.

Avoid using any skin products that may dry or irritate your skin including rough soups and cleaners, astringents, any products that contain alcohol, or lime. Speak with your healthcare provider to learn what products are safe to use during treatment.

Do not apply any other topical medications or take other medicines while using Tri Luma without first consulting with your healthcare provider.

What to avoid when using Tri Luma?

When using Tri Luma cream, you should avoid using any skin products that might cause dryness or irritation to your skin such as harsh soaps or cleansers, scrubs, and more. When should I apply Tri Luma cream?

It is recommended that you apply Tri Luma cream to pigmented skin areas once a day before bed.
