Emla Patch Information

Emla (lidocaine and prilocaine) is a type of local anaesthetic, which is a numbing medication. This form of medication is normally used as a method of pain relief whilst you are preparing for a basic medical procedure or operation. The way in which it works is that the active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine work together to block the nerve signals in your body, which are associated with pain. Emla may be used to numb the skin or the surfaces of the genital regions to lessen the pain from the surgeon or doctor inserting medical instrument. The medication may also be prescribed to you for other purposes that are not listed here; however your doctor will be able to provide you with further information.

Emla Patch Side Effects

Severe burning sensations, stinging, swelling, dizziness, bruising of the skin, unusual sensations of temperature or sleepiness after Emla Patch is applied are all side effects of which you may encounter. These are common side effects of the use of Emla Patch and in many occasions these side effects are more associated with the actual medical procedure that you have undergone, rather than the medication.

Mild burning sensations, skin redness or changes in skin colour where Emla has been applied are all less serious side effects which may occur as a result of using Emla. If you notice any side effects after Emla Patch has been used you are to monitor them and if they persist you should contact your doctor for further medical attention. This is not a complete list of side effects, and you should be cautious of your health after you have used Emla.
