Indications

Benicar is a blood pressure medication used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).

Olmesartan medoxomil is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that does not affect other cardiovascular regulating receptors. This allows Benicar to lower diastolic blood pressure to improve blood flow and manage blood pressure in those with mild to moderate hypertension.

This blood pressure medication is well-tolerated and can be used in combination with other blood and heart medications with minimal adverse reactions. Benicar also has a low incidence of adverse side effects which makes it a good choice for treating mild to moderate hypertension.

Uses and Dosage

The dose of Benicar prescribed will vary depending on the individual and the severity of their blood pressure issue being treated. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully when taking medication.

Do not use this anti-hypertensive drug if you are pregnant; Olmesartan can cause serious injury or death to an unborn baby if taken during your second or third trimester of pregnancy. Stop using Benicar and consult with your doctor right away if you become pregnant because it is important to manage your blood pressure during pregnancy.

FAQ

How does Benicar work?

Benicar uses Olmesartan medoxomil to lower blood pressure by inhibiting the angiotensin II receptor that is responsible for raising blood pressure. The medication also helps narrow blood vessels to slow blood flow, stimulates aldosterone which reduces sodium levels to help regulate blood pressure and volume.

How long does Benicar take to work?

Benicar is rapidly absorbed into your gastrointestinal tract and quickly begins working its way into your bloodstream upon your first dose. However, it may take up to 2 weeks before you see an improvement in your symptoms of hypertension. High blood pressure also often has no symptoms and therefore you may not notice a drastic change when you begin treatment.
