Indications

Valtrex is an antiviral medication used to treat viral infections such as genital herpes and shingles.

Valacyclovir is an acyclovir prodrug that inhibits viral DNA polymerase to help increase resistance to a virus and combat its spread. This helps the medication treat viral infections including reducing the duration of pain and genital lesion healing.

This antiviral medication may also be used to treat cold sores in children aged 12 and older or chicken pox in those above the age of 2.

Uses and Dosage

The dose of Valtrex prescribed will vary depending on the individual and viral condition being treated. Always follow your doctor’s directives and read medical packaging carefully.

  • Swallow tablet whole
  • Take with or without food
  • Drink lots of water while taking Valtrex to protect your kidneys
  • For cold sores, adults should take 2g twice 12 hours apart
  • Take 1g twice daily for an initial genital herpes episode
  • For recurrent episodes, take 500mg twice daily
  • Start taking Valtrex as soon as symptoms appear
  • Use Valtrex for the entire prescribed length of time
  • Do not skip doses; this could cause resistance to antiviral medicine
  • Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture

Cautions

Valtrex will not prevent the transmission of genital herpes to others; you can pass on herpes infections while taking this antiviral medication.

Avoid sexual intercourse or use a latex condom to prevent spreading herpes infections. Avoid touching an infected area and then touching your eyes; don’t let infected areas come into contact with others. Wash your hands frequently.

Consult with your doctor before taking Valtrex if you have HIV/AIDS, a weakened immune system, kidney disease, or if you have had a kidney or bone marrow transplant to ensure this medication is safe for you.

Valtrex can be harsh on your kidneys, effects which can increase when used with other medications that are also harmful to the kidneys. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter, vitamins, and herbal products, but especially the following types:

  • Antivirals
  • Chemotherapy
  • Certain antibiotics
  • Bowel disorder medication
  • Blood pressure medication
  • Pain or arthritis medicines

Valtrex treatment should begin as soon as possible after the development of symptoms of a herpes infection. These symptoms may include tingling, burning, blisters.

Stop taking this antiviral medication and call your doctor if you notice side effects that can harm red blood cells such as fever, easy bruising or bleeding, red spots on your skin, bloody diarrhea, pale or yellowed skin, weakness, fainting, or urinating less than usual.

Documentation and studies of pregnant women using Valtrex is limited but has not demonstrated a major risk to the unborn child from valacyclovir. Herpes can be passed from mother to child during childbirth. If you have genital herpes while pregnant, try to prevent herpes lesions as best as you can so you do not have them when your baby is born.

Valacyclovir can pass into breast milk and may cause harm to the nursing baby. Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding while taking Valtrex.

Do not share Valtrex with anyone else, even if you share symptoms.

FAQ

What’s the difference between valacyclovir and acyclovir?

Both are antiviral drugs that affect DNA replication to treat viral herpes infections, but Valtrex offers effects for longer. This means you can take doses fewer times a day than acyclovir.

Are cold sores and herpes the same?

Cold sores are similar to herpes and are caused by the herpes virus. The most common source of cold sores is herpes simplex virus type 1, but some cases caused by type two (which also causes genital herpes) are becoming more common. Valtrex can help treat both types of herpes infections.
