Pristiq (Generic name: Desvenlafaxine) is a new antidepressant approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. Pristiq is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI). Desvenlafaxine works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain (serotonin and norepinephrine), which helps to improve certain mood problems. Take Pristiq exactly as it was prescribed for you.
Pristiq Side Effects
The most common Pristiq side effects include constipation, dizziness, headache, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, sweating and etc. If you are experiencing any severe side effects such as abnormal bleeding or bruising, anxiety, coma, confusion, glaucoma, hallucinations, high blood pressure, increased cholesterol levels, loss of co-ordinations, low sodium levels, mood changes, restlessness, seizures, thoughts of suicide, and serious allergic reaction (rash, hives, difficult breathing, swelling of the lips, throat or tongue), please inform your doctor immediately.
Pristiq Precautions
Do NOT take Pristiq oral if you are allergic to Desvenlafaxine or venlafaxine (Effexor). Before taking Pristiq, tell your doctor if you have had any medical conditions such as bipolar disorder (manic depression), glaucoma, heart problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, low sodium levels, mania, seizures, stroke, kidney or liver problems. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Pristiq drug, especially of: aspirin, blood thinners (warfarin), MAO inhibitors (including linezolid, an antibiotic), medicines to treat migraine headache (triptans), medicines to treat mood disorders (lithium, serotonin, SNRIs, SSRIs, tricyclics), silbutramine, St John’s wort, tramadol (Ultram), tryptophan supplements. Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Pristiq is NOT approved for use in children under 18.
