Usage

Symbicort is a combination of an inhaled corticosteroid medicine, budesonide and a LABA medicine, formoterol. Inflammation in the lungs can lead to asthma symptoms. Inhaled corticosteroids help to decrease inflammation in the lungs. LABA medicines are used in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. LABA medicines help the muscles around the airways in your lungs stay relaxed to prevent asthma symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath. These symptoms can happen when the muscles around the airways tighten. This makes it hard to breathe. In severe cases, wheezing can stop your breathing and may lead to death if not treated right away. Symbicort is used to control symptoms of asthma and prevent symptoms such as wheezing in patients 6 years and older. Symbicort is used long term, to help improve lung function for better breathing in adults with COPD. The usual dosage is two puffs twice daily in the morning and evening, 12 hours apart. It may take one week or longer before you get the full benefit of this medication. After using the Symbicort inhaler, rinse your mouth with water and spit the water out, do not swallow it.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects may include throat irritation, headache, upper respiratory tract infection, throat pain, inflammation of mucous membranes of the sinuses (sinusitis), flu, back pain, nasal congestion, stomach discomfort, vomiting, thrush in the mouth and throat, infection and inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes (bronchitis). The serious side effects may include:

• Adrenal insufficiency;
• Chest pain, increased blood pressure, headache, tremor, nervousness;
• Decrease in blood potassium levels (hypokalemia);
• Eye problems including glaucoma and cataracts;
• Fungal infection in your mouth or throat (thrush);
• Immune system effects and a higher chance for infections;
• Increased wheezing right after taking Symbicort;
• Increases in blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia);
• Lower bone mineral density;
• Pneumonia and other lower respiratory tract infections;
• Serious allergic reactions including rash, hives, swelling and breathing problems;
• Slowed growth in children;
• Swelling of your blood vessels
