Description

Generic Name: lidocaine

Drug Class: local anesthetic

Lidoderm Patch Indications

Lidoderm is a prescription patch used to relieve the pain associated with post-herpetic neuralgia. It is also used to reduce pain and itch caused by certain skin conditions, like scrapes, skin irritation, and insect bites.

Lidoderm Patch Dosage

This is available in Lidoderm Patch 5% lidocaine.

Lidoderm Patch Mechanism of Action

This local anesthetic can provide analgesia or pain relief by lowering the aberrant firing of sodium channels on damaged pain fibers that are directly under the lidocaine patch. It can relieve both superficial pain and non-superficial qualities of pain.

How to Use Lidoderm Patch

Before starting to use this patch, it is necessary to read the patient information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not use any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. Further medical advice or additional details can be obtained from your doctor or pharmacist.

This patch must only be applied to intact skin. Do not apply it to any area that is irritated or injured. This can be applied three times a day, but no more than 8 hours for each application. Do not increase or decrease your Lidoderm Patch dosage or use it more frequently than recommended.

Step-by-step Guide on how to use Lidoderm:

  1. Wash your hands well.
  2. Choose the external area where you will apply the patch. It should be dry because the patch will not stick to a wet surface.
  3. Remove the protective liner from the patch.
  4. Gently apply the sticky side of the patch to your skin.
  5. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth after application, and wash your hands thoroughly.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not use this prescription drug if you have a known allergic reaction to lidocaine, other local anesthetics, or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Always be watchful for any serious allergy symptoms, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop using this patch and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of methemoglobinemia or liver disease. You should also discuss any prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking due to possible drug interactions.

While the patch is on, do not expose it to direct heat, including electric blankets, hot tubs, heating pads, sauna, and direct sunlight. Heat can stimulate the release of more lidocaine into your skin.

Before going through an MRI, inform your doctor or the radiologist that you have a lidocaine patch. This patch may contain a metal that can lead to serious burns during an MRI procedure. Your physician may ask you to remove the patch and apply a new one afterward.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms must take this oral drug only if extremely necessary. It is necessary to discuss all the possible risks with a healthcare provider.
