Mevacor (Lovastatin) is a medication used to lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol in the blood. It can also be used to slow the progress of heart disease, prevent heart attacks, prevent chest pain, and lower triglycerides. Mevacor works by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that creates Mevalonate. It reduces the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Mevalonate is a building block for cholesterol biosynthesis. Mevacor interferes with its production by inhibiting HMG-CoA, and in turn reduces the production of cholesterol, reducing the levels in the body. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had liver or kidney disease, diabetes, a thyroid disorder, or if you drink more than two alcoholic beverages daily. You should not use Mevacor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you have an active liver disease. Tell your doctor about any medications you are currently taking to reduce the risk of muscle problems and other interactions. Avoid drinking alcohol while using Mevacor, as it can increase your risk of liver problems. Common side effects of Mevacor include infections, headache, or easy injury. Call your doctor immediately if you experience signs of liver problems, which include loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, tiredness, dark urine, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Mevacor can cause the breakdown of muscle tissue, which can lead to kidney failure. Call your doctor at once if you experience signs of kidney problems, which can include little or no urination, dark coloured urine, swelling in your feet or ankles, weakness, or unexplained muscle pain. As well, if you experience any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.
