Accupril Uses

Accupril (generic name: quinapril hydrochloride) is an oral medication indicated to manage hypertension or high blood pressure. It could be used as monotherapy or together with other thiazide diuretics. By controlling high blood pressure, complications like stroke, heart attacks, and kidney problems could be prevented. This prescription drug is also used to manage heart failure together with diuretics and/or digitalis.

This is available in Accupril 40 mg, 20 mg, 10 mg, and 5 mg tablet forms.

Mechanism of Action

This angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor works by hindering the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a vasoconstrictor. It can also reduce the secretion of aldosterone. This mineralocorticoid steroid hormone is responsible for facilitating renal sodium and fluid reabsorption.

How to use Accupril

Read the medicine information sheet that comes with this product first. Avoid taking any prescription medication without fully understanding the drug information and warnings in the guide provided. If you need additional medical advice or have some questions regarding the use of this drug, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once or twice daily. You may take it with or without a meal or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the medication and drink a glass of water right after. Avoid high-fat meals when taking this drug because it could decrease the absorption of this ACE inhibitor.

Remember to take this drug regularly and exactly as directed. Schedule the dosing of your medications to avoid missing a dose. Do not change your Accupril dosage and frequency as it depends on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other medications you are taking. Also, do not stop taking Accupril abruptly, for it may result in worsening conditions.

Before using this oral drug, you should disclose your complete medical history to your physician, including any history of hyperkalemia, liver disease, and blood filtering procedures like dialysis and LDL apheresis. Certain conditions may significantly affect how your system will respond to this treatment. Further, you must talk to your doctor about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking because of possible drug interactions.

Be watchful for an allergic reaction while you are on Accupril. Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to quinapril, benazepril, other ACE inhibitors, or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Immediately discontinue medication and seek emergency medical management once you notice signs of hypersensitivity, such as breathing trouble, severe dizziness, itching, swelling of the face, and skin rashes.

This drug may increase the level of potassium in your blood. Signs of hyperkalemia include muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and vomiting. Report to your healthcare provider if this occurs. Tell your doctor before taking any potassium supplement or salt substitutes that may contain potassium.

Among the adverse effects of this ACE inhibitor are dizziness and lightheadedness. Limit or avoid alcoholic beverages or any substances that could worsen these side effects. You should also practice safety caution when using machinery, driving, or doing any activities that require alertness.
