WHAT IS AN ATROVENT INHALER? 

Atrovent HFA (Ipratropium), also called Atrovent Inhaler, is an inhalation aerosol that helps treat bronchospasm in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Bronchospasm is the contraction of bronchial tubes in the lungs. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airway to improve airflow in your lungs. Atrovent Inhalers can also help treat chronic bronchitis and emphysema.  

ATROVENT INHALER PRECAUTIONS 

Before using Atrovent Inhaler, contact your healthcare provider if you are allergic to it, or have any other allergies. Inform them further if you have a medical or family history of: 

  • Glaucoma (angle-closure type) 
  • Urinary Retention 
  • Benign Prostate Enlargement 

Seek medical advice from your doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

This medication is for maintenance treatment only. Taking this medication as rescue therapy is not recommended.

ATROVENT INHALER SIDE EFFECTS 

The common side effects of an Atrovent Inhaler are dizziness, nausea, upset stomach, dry mouth, constipation, bronchitis, bitter taste, fatigue, cold symptoms, flu symptoms, trouble breathing, back pain, and chest tightness. Stop taking this medication and seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing serious side effects, such as: 

  • Allergic Reactions (Hives; Facial, Lips, Tongue, or Throat Inflammation) 
  • Paradoxical Bronchospasm 
  • Breathing Problems (Wheezing, Choking) 
  • Urinary Retention 
  • Blurred Vision

ATROVENT INHALER DOSAGE 

Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding the dosage for your condition.  

The recommended starting dose for this medication is two inhalations 4 times a day. This can increase depending on your doctor’s advice, but the number should not exceed 12 in a 24-hour period.  

Priming the inhaler is a must before using it for the first time. Hold it upright and spray twice into the air, away from your face. If the inhaler has not been used for 3 days, prime it again by doing the same.  

Space your doses 6 to 8 hours apart if you are taking this medication with a nebulizer. 

Each canister only provides 200 inhalations. Throw it away if the counter reaches 0, even if it feels like there is still some left inside.
