Nardil is prescribed for the treatment of major depression. It belongs to a group of medications called as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs). Depression is thought to be caused due to chemical imbalance in brain, which affects your whole body and can cause physical and emotional problems such as feeling low, loss of interest in activities, poor appetite, overeating, disturbed sleep, loss of sex drive, lack of energy and feeling guilty over nothing. Nardil works by acting on brain chemicals called amines which are involved in controlling mood. Nardil is especially useful when depression does not follow typical pattern, anxiety or fear is a main symptom, and treatment with other antidepressants have failed. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The usual starting dose is 15 mg three times daily. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.

Nardil is manufactured by Erfa and comes from Canada. The active ingredient in Nardil is Phenelzine. There is no generic available for this medication. Nardil is available as tablets in the dosage strength of 15 mg.
Stop taking Nardil and call your doctor at once if you have one of these serious side effects:
• Abnormalities of blood cells
• High levels of sodium in blood
• High temperature with muscle stiffness
• Liver problems
• Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (high fever, sweating, unstable blood pressure, reduced consciousness, muscle stiffness and reduced automatic bodily functions)
• Severe mental confusion and disordered thinking
Less serious side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, difficulty sleeping, weakness, blurred vision, constipation, nausea, vomiting, tremors, sexual disturbances, weight gain, and dry mouth. Please call your doctor if you have any further concerns or questions.
Nardil tablets react with a substance called tyramine which is found in some foods and drinks. If you eat or drink anything containing tyramine while you are taking Nardil, or within 14 days of taking Nardil, you may have a very severe rise in blood pressure. Do not eat cheese, liver, yoghurt, yeast/meat extracts, flavoured textured vegetable protein, broad bean pods, protein which has been allowed to age, dry sausage such as salami or pepperoni, fermented soya bean extract, excessive amounts of chocolate. Do not drink alcoholic beverages. Nardil might cause drowsiness or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know if the tablets affect you in this way. Do not take Nardil if you are allergic to phenelzine, have liver disease, had stroke, have heart problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are taking other antidepressants, are taking strong painkillers like morphine, are taking guanethidine and dextromethorphan. Nardil may interact with other antidepressants, like MAOIs, tricyclics, SNRIs, SSRIs, strong painkillers, guanethidine, anti-epileptic medicines, and migraine medications.
