Loniten Information

Loniten (Minoxidil) is used for the treatment of severe hypertension that is difficult to control. It is taken with other medicines. Loniten tablets contain minoxidil which is a powerful drug for lowering the blood pressure. It works by relaxing and enlarging certain small blood vessels so that blood flows through them more easily. Loniten tablets should not be used to promote scalp hair growth. Only the topical form of minoxidil is recommended for that use.

Loniten Side Effects

The most common side effects of Loniten may include hair color changes; gastrointestinal intolerance; breast tenderness; rash; changes in color, length, or thickness of body or facial hair. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Difficulty in breathing, especially when lying down;
• Increase in heart rate (fast or pounding heartbeat);
• New or worsening chest pain;
• Swelling in your ankles, legs or feet;
• Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, dizziness, light-headedness or fainting;
• Weight Gain especially in your face and midsection

Loniten Precautions

Do not use Loniten if you are allergic to Minoxidil or to any other ingredients in this medication or if your high blood pressure is caused by hormones from a tumour (phaeochromocytoma) usually near the kidneys; if you have pulmonary hypertension associated with a heart valve disorder (mitral stenosis); have severely reduced liver function. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, including if you are taking prescription and/or non-prescription products (especially other medications for high blood pressure, diuretics (water pills), and guanethidine; have or have ever had heart disease, a heart attack, pheochromocytoma or kidney disease; are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Loniten and other medications. Loniten tablets encourage salt and water to remain in your body. Too much salt and water in the body can make you feel breathless, wheezy, sick and tired, and can stop Loniten working properly. Weigh yourself each day while you are taking Loniten. Call your doctor if you gain more than 5 pounds quickly. Loniten also makes your heart beat faster. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how Loniten affects you.
