Risedronate works by slowing bone loss to maintain strong bones and prevent bone fractures. Actonel is approved to help prevent fractures of both the spine and nonspinal areas like the hip, leg, pelvis, wrist, upper arm bone, and collarbone.

Side Effects

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER). The most common Actonel side effects include: back pain, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, heart burn, indigestion, joint pain, muscle pain, and stomach upset. Tell your doctor or get medical attention immediately if you experience the following severe side effects:
• An allergic reaction (itching, rash, swelling, difficult breathing);
• Black/tarry stools;
• Chest pain;
• Low calcium levels (muscle spasms, numbness, or tingly feeling);
• New or worsening heartburn;
• Severe bone, joint, muscle pain;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain;
• Other unusual or new pain on hip/thigh;
• Vision problems;
• Vomit that looks like coffee grounds

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Actonel if you are allergic to Risedronate, bisphosphonates or any ingredients of this medication. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history especially:
• If you cannot sit upright or stand for at least 30 minutes since you should not lay down for at least 30 minutes after taking Actonel;;
• If you have low levels of calcium in your blood (hypocalcemia);

Actonel may cause irritation of the esophagus and stomach. Some cases have been severe enough to warrant hospitalization. The risk is greater in people who lie down soon after taking Actonel or who don't take it with a full glass of water. Avoid lying down for 30 minutes after taking the medication. Do not chew or suck the tablet because of a potential for oropharyngeal ulceration. Do not eat or drink anything except plain water; wait at least 30 minutes to take other medications after taking Actonel. Talk to your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, and herbal medications. Also tell them about any vitamins and supplements you take. There may be a drug interaction between Actonel and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor before using this medication if you are breast-feeding as Actonel can pass into breastmilk.
