Indications

Mycobutin (rifabutin) is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain infections caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in patients with advanced HIV infection. The indications for Mycobutin include:

Prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease: Mycobutin is indicated for the prevention of disseminated MAC disease in patients with advanced HIV infection. MAC is a type of bacterial infection that can affect various organs in the body, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Note that Mycobutin is specifically indicated for the prevention of MAC disease and is not intended for the treatment of active MAC infections.

Use and Dosage

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once or twice daily. Take this medication with food if stomach upset occurs. For the treatment of tuberculosis, this drug is sometimes taken twice weekly.

The dosage is based on your medical condition, weight, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to tell your doctor and pharmacist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time(s) every day.

Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear. Stopping the medication too early or skipping doses may allow the bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a return of the infection and cause the infection to be more difficult to treat (resistant).

Tell your doctor if your condition lasts or gets worse.

FAQ

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention.

What should I avoid while taking Mycobutin?

Avoid wearing dentures or contact lenses. Mycobutin may cause certain body fluids to turn red, orange, or brown. This includes tears and saliva. Although this is a harmless side effect, discoloured tears or saliva could permanently stain your contact lenses or dentures.

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
