What is Tecfidera?

Tecfidera, with the generic name dimethyl fumarate, is an oral medication indicated to treat patients who have relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Also, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. Even so, this medication is not indicated to cure but can only lessen the episodes of worsening MS.

This is available in Tecfidera 240 mg and 120 mg capsule form.

Tecfidera: Mechanism of Action

This nuclear factor erythroid (Nrf2) activator is thought to work by suppressing inflammatory activity and protecting nerve cells from cell death. This type of medication can also prevent the immune system’s attack on the central nervous system (CNS).

How to use Tecfidera

To start, read the medication guide or information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not use this prescription drug unless you fully understand the drug information in the guide provided. If you have further queries about this treatment or need more medical advice, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this capsule orally. This is usually prescribed twice daily. You may take it with or without a meal or as directed by your doctor. If you experience flushing, you should take this drug with food. Swallow the capsule whole and drink a glass of water. Do not split, chew, or crush the delayed-release capsule because it could release the active ingredients all at once and elevate the risk of side effects.

Remember to use this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule to achieve the best results. Your dosing will depend on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not increase your dosage or take Tecfidera more abruptly. In addition, never stop taking it abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Tecfidera Side Effects

  • Signs of an infection (fever, chills, persistent sore throat)

This is not a complete or full list of Tecfidera’s side effects.

Precautions when using Tecfidera

Before taking this oral drug, you must disclose your full medical history with your physician. This includes any history of low white blood cell count, liver disease, or infections. Certain medical conditions or disorders may greatly impact how your body will respond to this treatment. You should also talk about all the supplements, prescription drugs, and nonprescription drugs you are taking, for they might have drug interactions with this prescription medicine.

Always be watchful for an allergic reaction during the course of treatment. Do not use this oral drug if you have a known allergy to dimethyl fumarate, proximal fumarate, monomethyl fumarate, or any inactive ingredients each capsule may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are swelling of the face, itchiness, skin rashes, severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing. If this occurs, seek emergency help at once.

This drug may weaken your immune system. You are more likely to get infected or have a worsening infection while on Tecfidera. It is very essential to wash your hands often and practice good hygiene. You must also avoid contact with people who have an infection or have recently received live vaccines. Further, patients taking this Nrf2 activator are also not advised to have immunizations or vaccinations.

There are still no definitive studies to tell whether Tecfidera could cause harm to pregnant or breastfeeding moms and their infants. With this, you must only use this drug if clearly needed.
