Linzess (Linaclotide) Medication Information

Uses

Your healthcare provider may prescribe Linzess to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) or chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). In both of these conditions, a person has difficulty passing normal bowel movements. Bowel movements may be irregular, inconsistent, and painful.

Linzess works by pulling the electrolytes chloride and bicarbonate from the inside of intestinal cells into the empty space of the intestines. By pulling electrolytes into the intestines, Linzess promotes fluid movement, which softens the stool and increases transit in the gastrointestinal tract. Linzess also helps to treat pain associated with constipation.

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe a dose based on which condition you are treating.

For IBS-C, the correct dose is 290 mcg by mouth once daily, 30 minutes before the first meal of the day.
